MAZZA
Italian bassist and double bassist who began her professional career in Calabria. She attended the University of Calabria where she graduated in cultural anthropology with a thesis in ethnomusicology.
After 2 months in New York, during which she worked on the cataloguing of the Alan Lomax fund, she moved to Milan. She completed her studies in double bass at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory under the direction of Ezio Pederzani and at the Novara Conservatory with Maestro Davide Botto. She studied at the Civic Jazz School in Milan with E.Intra and Franco Cerri.
In 2001 she received the award for best musician at the Rumori Mediterranei jazz festival when she opened for the Michael Brecker Quartet. In addition to her activity in jazz clubs and festivals, she also continues in pop. As an electric bassist, she is a sideman live and in the studio. In 2005 she went on tour with Ron. In 2006 and 2007 she toured with Massimo Ranieri with whom she recorded the DVD Canto perché non so nuotare. She has participated in the albums Incontri con la anima by Roberto Cacciapaglia, Hommage au duc, L'Illogica allegria con La Crus and Samuele Bersani, Luca with Luca Gemma. She participates in national TV and radio shows: Bulldozer for Rai 2, Il volo, with Fabio Volo on LA7, Alle women except me on Rai 2 with Massimo Ranieri.
She participated as a musician, actress and co-author of the music for Enrico Bertolino's show Votes a Perdere , which was reproduced throughout Italy for over a year. In Italian theatres she presented Rainer Maria Rilke's show L'altra viaggio , for which she composed the music and performance, alongside Massimiliano Finazzer Floris and Galatea Ranzi.
She then moved to Paris where she continued her musical activity alongside other artists and performed at various jazz festivals, including Ferrara Jazz, Umbria Jazz Winter, Nuremberg Festival, Ascona Jazz Festival, Euro Bass Day, Blue Note Milano, Barcellona Jazz Festival, Radio France, Festival Saint Germain des Prés in Paris.
In 2010 she published Il musicista della strada e altre storie published by Bradipolibri.
Since 2009, she has accompanied the American singer Ndidi 'O. In 2015, she opened for the singer Johnny Hallyday. In 2016, she accompanied the French singer Axel Bauer. In 2012 and 2013, she became a teacher at the Warwick Bass Camp with Lee Sklar, Alphonso Johnson, John Patitucci and Victor Wooten.
Since 2016, she has been David Hallyday's bassist. She is a teacher of double bass, bass and music theory at the CFPM in Paris.
Since August 2019, she has taught bass at Victor Wooten's Bass Camp in Nashville where she performs with guitarist Mike Stern.
